One of the major contributor to guest comfort and  relaxation at Chabil Mar is the beautifully designed and maintained tropical gardens.

Ask anyone who has visited Chabil Mar about their experience and they will rave about the lush and aesthetic gardens.

“Guess we are prejudiced but they are surely among the most beautiful you will ever enjoy in the tropics,” says Marketing Manager Larry France.

Dianne Bulman, the developer of the property is credited for the amazing and wonderful plants that can be found throughout the compound. Bulman worked with various experts on plants and designed the original gardens and planters with Alberto Arias (pictured on the right) who is now the Gardens and Landscape Manager at Chabil Mar.

“Alberto is responsible for planting and maintenance, along with his staff of Luis, Orlando and Caesar whom you will see each and every day working in some way to keep them lush, healthy and bright for your enjoyment,” says France.

A myriad of unique plants that are exquisite not only to Placencia but the country of Belize can be found at Chabil Mar. The plants are a blend of species and varieties from the natural seaside scapes of Belize as well as the jungle scapes, and some were even imported from the Maya Mountains range and jungles of the Cayo District to encompass an authentic Belizean tropical paradise.

According to Larry, even the soil used in the container pots is special and was brought from the banks of the Burrell Boom River, north of the Belize International Airport, for its fertility and natural born nutrients.

Guests will also find a large Ceiba Tree that is about 40 feet tall planted in 2005. To the ancient Maya, the Ceiba Tree was sacred because it connects to three layers of the world: the roots which reaches into the underworld of death, the trunk which is in the middleword of life, and the branches which reaches up into the uppeword of paradise.

A multitude of  topiaries are scattered throughout the property and are the personal art and craftmanship of Alberto. It is interesting to note that Alberto is a self taught topiary artist who took this landscape art as a hobby.

When you visit, here are some topiaries you will likely see: Alligator, Bear, Bird, Bull, Cat, Elephant, Horse, Fox and so much more. (Hint: Some are in containers, some on railings and others in mother earth at the beach, near pools, walkways and rear of the resort grounds.)

Belize and Chabil Mar were featured on The Doctors TV Show, an American syndicated talk show that airs daily in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Ireland, Sweden and Finland.

The show was about a motivational story of Audrey, a mom who lost 150 pounds in less than a year. To reward Audrey for her remarkable weight loss success, The Doctors surprise her with an all-expenses-paid vacation to Belize!

The Doctors shares the motivational story of Audrey, a mom who made food her medicine to lose 150 pounds in less than a year.

Audrey says she struggled with being overweight her entire life. “I was a size 10 when all the other girls were size twos, and I would always hear from everybody, ‘Oh, but you have such a pretty face,’” she says. “You start making fun of yourself. My self-confidence was completely in the gutter.”

Despite trying many different diets over the years, Audrey was never able to maintain long-term weight-loss results.

When Audrey was pregnant with her daughter, she was put on bed rest, which resulted in her gaining more than a healthy amount of pregnancy weight. “My heaviest, post-baby, was 278 pounds, and I’m 5’3”,” she explains. “I felt like I was walking around in a haze. I was just inadvertently killing myself with food.”

Audrey’s daughter became the driving force behind her mission to slim down once and for all. “I lost my mom when I was in college, so I really wanted to live a longer life. I wanted to be around for my daughter, so that I can meet my grandkids — something my mother never got the chance to do.”

While researching healthy weight loss methods online, Audrey came across a clean-eating cookbook. She started making her own meals using fresh, wholesome ingredients, and she cut out excess sugar and processed foods from her diet. “The very first week that I gave up just my diet sodas, I lost 10 pounds,” Audrey says. “That was, kind of, that ‘click’ moment where it all made sense. I should just bring my body back to nature, and let nature do the rest of the work.”

Over an 11-month span, Audrey lost nearly half of her body weight through dietary changes alone. “The weight just flew off. It was like I was finally giving my body what it truly needed,” she explains.

The Water Station that was put together by the Chabil Mar Team

Chabil Mar was a proud sponsor of this year’s 3rd annual  End of the World Placencia Marathon.

For those who do not know, the End of the World Marathon is a 26.2 mile marathon that was first held in December 2012 to commemorate the end of the 13^th Baktun in the Maya Long Count Calendar which was a significant time to the Maya people who believed that it was the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new one.

Because many people thought that the world would end on that day (December 21^th 2012) and it didn’t, the organizers of the marathon decided to retain the name “The End of the World Marathon” in honor of the distinguished writer Aldous Huxley who wrote in 1934, “If the world had any ends, British Honduras (now Belize) would certainly be one of them.”

This year, the End of the World Marathon was held on December 7th 2014 and started at the football field in Placencia and passed through Seine Bight and Maya Beach and then returned and ended in Placencia Village.
